Brunton pasty was the highlight in Blues bore-draw

NEWS & STAR column 06.10.22

Most fans will have found it difficult to pick a highlight from Saturday’s bore-draw with Crewe.

I was one of the lucky ones, I had no problem – it was the Brunton pasty!

Normally, my match-day experience is entirely based on whether we win or not.

But on Saturday as a belated birthday present I was treated to the hospitality in Foxy’s restaurant. And, despite a poor quality game, it helped make it a memorable day.

The atmosphere was friendly with sponsors and groups of supporters sharing a special experience. One fan was celebrating 60 years of supporting the Blues.

Everyone was made to feel welcome, the staff could not have been more helpful and the roast beef meal was excellent.

The club are reaping the rewards and plenty of compliments after working hard in the summer with their catering partners, local company John Watt and Son, to improve hospitality.

There was even a nice surprise at the end when we ventured back into Foxy’s for the man-of-the-match presentation to Paul Huntington and were treated to a very tasty Brunton pasty from Carlisle bakery, McCalls.

The hospitality package includes three-course dining options, match tickets, optional pre-match tour of the ground, pre-match player visit, team sheets and some match day competitions. You can find out more information on the club’s website.

The whole thing helped take the edge off what was a disappointing result. Whether or not it was fatigue after two tough away trips, the Blues never got going.

No-one could find that spark to ignite the performance and, I suppose, credit should go to the Crewe team who had done their homework and nullified us as an attacking threat.

There were still plenty of positives. We have only lost once this season, are unbeaten in seven games and are ninth in the table, just a couple of points off the play-off positions. That’s a massive improvement on last season and most of us would have settled for that at this stage.

With players coming back from injury we have every reason to be optimistic.

Once again CUOSC representatives were out and about mingling with fans before the game.  As well as a CUOSC stand in the Fan Zone behind the paddock, we now also have a regular presence in the concourse under the East Stand. Why not come and have a chat?

The Blues will be backed by nearly 700 fans when they travel to Hartlepool on Saturday. The club have sold out of away tickets for what is certain to be an awkward fixture against a team managed by former United boss Keith Curle.
